Sony yesterday released on their website and www.michaeljackson.com the 'new' Michael Jackson song 'This Is It', a song that shares its title with the film due for release on 28th October. However, the song is not as 'new' as Sony want the fans to be believe. Numerous news agents and Jackson fan sites picked up on the fact that the was a rejected track for Jacksons 1992 album, Dangerous. After deciding not to have the song on the album, Jackson instead gave the song to another artist, Safire, who released the song under the title 'I Never Heard'. Did Sony fail to mention any of this information in order to get fans purchasing the movie soundtrack? A movie soundtrack that is just another repackaged Greatest Hits collection to milk more money from Jackson.
As for the actual song, while it is not Jacksons best work, it is far from his worst. The song sounds very similar to Heal The World, which is no bad thing. The vocals sound great, however it is difficult to judge through this song what Jacksons voice was like in his later months of life as the vocals were most likely recorded in the early 90's. While the song is a good listen, you get the feeling that throughout it is building up to something that it never quite reaches.
Listen to the song below, also included below the single is the Safire song 'I Never Heard':
